Birth & Postpartum Doula Support

Birth Doula Support

A birth doula is a companion who supports a birthing woman during her labor and birth. Birth doulas are trained to provide continuous, one-on-one care, as well as providing information, physical support, and emotional support to a birthing woman and their partner. Studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%. Doulas often use the power of touch, massage, essential oils, and have a big "tool kit" to draw upon for "tricks" when needed. They offer a calm and reassuring presence to reduce stress and anxiety during labor and birth.

In one landmark study that evaluated the effects of doulas and partners working together, researchers found that combining a supportive partner and a doula significantly lowered the mother’s risk of cesarean compared to just having a supportive partner alone. Many helping hands make light work. Whether you are needing a lot of hands on support, or just someone to help guide you with reassuring words and a calm presence, I can help support you and model to your companion how to be attentive, nurturing and relaxed all at the same time. Even if you and your partner are seasoned parents.

I have 13 years of experience attending women during their births. I am a mama bear when it comes to advocating for my clients. As your doula, I will support you and your partner so that you can both focus on your birth journey. In addition, I also bring my skills, knowledge and experience from being a midwife to my care when serving as a birth and postpartum doula. I am calm and nurturing by nature, and I would be honored to support you along your journey into parenting.

Postpartum Doula Support

Many people have called me the "baby whisperer". As a retired nanny of 11 years, I still love to support families beyond midwifery care. I also bring to the table four years of experience having worked as a postpartum doula in a high-volume waterbirth center taking care of families once the midwives went home. Whether you want me to: cook you up some health food; run errands; do activities with your older children; snuggle your baby/children while you sleep; or just want me to hold space for you as you process these transformative life changes; what ever your needs, I am your lady. I would be honored to support you!

Overall, as your postpartum doula, I will support and nurture you so that you and your loved ones can ease into your new roles confidently and smoothly. The quality of emotional care received by a mother during labor, birth, and immediately afterwards, is a vital factor that can strengthen the emotional ties between the her and her child. The importance of this relationship cannot be over emphasized, since these early relationships largely determine the future of each family, and also society as a whole.

Benefits of a postpartum doula:

  • Reassurance and emotional support to help parents feel comfortable and confident with their babies;
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care support;
  • Practical hands-on help such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry and short errands;
  • Provide childcare/sibling care; and
  • If a birth doula becomes your postpartum doula, it provides continuity of care which can be reassuring during such a big transition in a family's life.
