What is Holistic Pelvic CareTM ?
Holistic Pelvic CareTM (HPCTM) is physical and energetic alignment for the pelvic bowl. HPCTM, as defined and developed by Tami Kent (a women's health physical therapist), is the release of muscle and fascia layers in the pelvis in order to help the pelvic muscles better engage, restore pelvic organs to proper alignment, diminish pelvic floor pain and renew energy flow throughout your core.
What symptoms can HPCTM help to address?
There are a variety of symptoms that HPCTM can help with for women who have had or have not had children. From fertility work to recovery from birth events, many women have found HPCTM to be an important addition to their healing process. Specifically for postpartum women, HPCTM can help with:
- Vaginal or pelvic pain
- Leaking urine or frequent urge to urinate
- Sensation of vaginal wall "falling out" at opening of vagina
- Difficulty doing kegel squeeze or tightening pelvic floor muscles (weak muscles)
- Vaginal dryness, vaginal gas, or feeling vagina significantly open after birth
- Diminished sex drive (low libido)
- Pain with intercourse, and
- Feeling a sensation of heaviness or congestion in the pelvis
Can I just do kegel exercises after birth to resolve my problems?
In Tami Kent's latest book “Mothering From Your Center,” she notes, “The majority of pelvic issues are the result of imbalances in the muscle recruitment pattern, diminished elasticity in the fascia or muscle fibers, inhibition of muscles, and poor organ position.” These issues are not the result of weak pelvic muscles and therefore you cannot “kegel” your way to a solution! HPCTM can help restore balance so that healing can begin.
What can I expect from an HPCTM session?
We will spend time going over your health history and goals for care. Each session will involve an assessment of your pelvic floor muscles and fascia. This involves an internal vaginal exam. After the assessment, an internal trigger point massage (also termed myofascial release) and focused breath awareness to release tension, bring blood flow to your core, clear congestion, alleviate the stress of stretching from birth, realign tissue, and restore balance in your pelvic floor.
Most issues can be addressed in 2-4 sessions. For preventative health, it is recommended to have a HPCTM session once a year, in addition to your annual well-woman exam. Initial visit are approximately 90 minutes and follow up visits are approximately 60 minutes.
I completed Tami Kent's HPCTM workshop for health care providers in April 2016, and I am excited to offer this healing modality in my practice and to the community.
